R Subramaniakumar is Managing Director & CEO of the Bank since June 23, 2022, afternoon (A/N). He is a veteran in the Banking industry with around 40 years of experience.
Subramaniakumar is one of India’s most respected banking leaders with over four decades of distinguished experience across public and private sector banking, financial institutions, and regulatory-led transformations. Widely recognised for his ability to steer complex institutions through periods of disruption, he brings a rare blend of strategic vision, execution rigour, and deep domain expertise across banking operations.
His core strengths span business transformation, digital banking, risk governance, financial restructuring, innovation, and large-scale organisational re-engineering—making him a trusted leader in both growth and crisis environments.
Subramaniakumar began his banking career with Punjab National Bank (PNB) in 1980, where he served for over three decades. During this period, he played a pivotal role in modernising banking operations and driving early technology adoption. He led key functions including Digital Banking, HR Transformation, MSME Banking, Retail Banking, and overseas Operations. He was part of the core strategic leadership team at PNB, contributing to its expansion into international markets such as the UK, Bhutan, Nepal, and Kazakhstan. He served as Director of DRUK PNB Bank, Bhutan, strengthening cross-border banking capabilities.
Prior to joining RBL Bank, he was the Managing Director & CEO of Indian Overseas Bank, where he led a comprehensive turnaround strategy, focusing on strengthening asset quality and risk controls, driving profitability recovery and operational efficiency, accelerating digital adoption and customer-centric transformation. He has also held the position of Executive Director at Indian Bank and Indian Overseas Bank.
Subramaniakumar has been entrusted with some of the most complex assignments in Indian financial services. He was appointed as an Administrator at Dewan Housing Finance Corporation Limited (DHFL), where he led India’s first large-scale NBFC resolution under IBC during the pandemic, setting a benchmark in financial restructuring and stakeholder coordination. He was also the Advisor to Administrator at SREI Infrastructure Finance Limited where he oversaw resolution and stabilisation under regulatory supervision. These assignments underscore his credibility with regulators, ability to manage systemic risk, and leadership in high-stakes environments.
Over the span of his career, he has held several influential board and advisory roles. He was an Independent Director and Chairman (Investment Committee) of the LIC Pension Fund Limited. He was a board member of Indian Financial Technology & Allied Services (IFTAS), Repco Home Finance Ltd, and India 1 Payments Ltd. He has also contributed to policy and industry development through membership in Reserve Bank of India (RBI) committees and participation in IDRBT and IBA-IDRBT committees on smart cards, micro ATMs, and financial inclusion standards.
Subramaniakumar has received many accolades in the areas of advancing financial inclusion, digital banking ecosystems, and customer-centric banking models. He is also a visiting faculty at premier institutions, including RBI Staff College. He is a strong advocate of technology-led banking transformation and process re-engineering.
He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Physics with a Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Application (PGDCA). He has acquired CISA (Certified Information System Audit) & CISM (Certified Information Security Manager) certifications from ISACA, USA. He holds the CAIIB (Certified Associate of Indian Institute of Bankers) certification, and Advanced Banking Certificate from University of Maryland, USA.
